DUNSTER SHOW POLO DEMONSTRATION Friday, August 15 (For photos, click here) West Somerset Polo Club returned to its century-old roots when four teams present a lively polo demonstration at Dunster Show on Friday, August 15, backed by an impressive WSPC stand. The Club was only a few years old when it moved to Dunster around 1908, and played within the shadow of the Castle up to the outbreak of World War Two. Celebrated players included Winston Churchill and the Maharajah of Jaipur, whose donation of a clubhouse still stands today. The modern WSPC, revived in 1990, fielded four teams for the demonstration, starting with a match between Eggesford PC's Tom Harris, Katie Harris and John Dalton-Morgan, against DSSH PC's Issy Tilley, Jess Andrews and Tom Dalton-Morgan. The Devon and Somerset team took the trophy, a special chocolate cake which presumably had a short shelf life. The adult teams of Jo Cadman, James Harris and Henry Sumption against Octavia Campbell-Davies, Trevor Reynolds and Jeremy Toye finished off the day, backed throughout by Philip Douglas's fine commentary. Philip, assisted by Terry Cadman and Jeremy Toye, put together an excellent stand, with photos from past and present, trophies, details of Club history and the rules of polo, and stick-and-ball displays. The stand attracted visitors throughout the day, and we collected a good list of useful contacts for the future. | ||
